Wisdom and Joy

Wisdom and Joy (Proverbs 1:1-7)

 I. The Source of Joy: The Heart (Proverbs 14:10, 13; 15:13, 15; 17:22; 18:14)

A. A cheerful countenance may not mean a joyful heart. (Proverbs 14:13)

B. A joyful heart will result in a cheerful countenance. (Proverbs 15:13)

“The key principle of cheerfulness is this: cheerfulness starts with the heart, not with one’s circumstances. A cheerful heart can transcend all sorts of painful external factors, but no amount of contrived enthusiasm can provide solace to a heart that is pained.”

Daniel Estes, Handbook on the Wisdom Books and Psalms

II. Growing a Joyful Heart

A. Trust in the Lord (Proverbs 3:13-18; 16:20; 19:23)

B. Live righteously (Proverbs 8:32-36; 10:28; 12:20; 14:21; 21:15; 29:2, 6, 18)

C. Delight in the right things (Proverbs 5:18; 10:28; 13:9, 12; 15:30)

1. The wicked can find momentary joy in wrong ways (Proverbs 10:23; 15:21; 17:5; 24:17-18)

2. Righteous desires will ultimately be fulfilled (Proverbs 10:28; 13:9; 15:30) (Psalm 84:11-12; 37:4)

D. Let good words enter the mind (Proverbs 12:25; 15:23)

E. Have a godly family (Proverbs 17:21, 25; 23:15-16, 24-25; 27:11; 29:3)

1. Foolish family members bring great sorrow

2. Righteous family members bring joy (Proverbs 25:28)

“Cheerfulness than, is not a passive response to favorable circumstances, but rather is the consequences of active personal choices that focus on values, inspirations, and commitments that honor God.”

Daniel Estes, Handbook on the Wisdom Books and Psalms

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

Romans 5:1-2
