Discipleship in Marriage
Ephesians 5:15, 18-33

I. Wives
A. The command: “submit yourselves”
B. The focus of the command: “unto your own husbands” (Genesis 1:18)
C. The reason for the command: “for the husband is the head of the wife…”
* the husband as the head
* the husband as the savior
The Importance of Roles:
– Male & female are both in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27)
– God created roles before the fall (1 Timothy 2:13; Romans 5:12-19)
– Jesus is subject to the Father (1 Corinthians 11:3)
– Jesus subjected Himself to His earthly parents (Luke 2:51)
D. The manner in obeying the command:
* “As unto the Lord”
* “In everything”
E. How does this disciple? (1Peter 3)
Submission works a change in the life of a husband.
* Through purity
* Through reverence
II. Husbands
A. The command: “love your wives”
B. The manner of love
* As Christ gave
* Nourishing (Ephesians 6:4)
* Cherishing (1 Thessalonians 2:7)
C. The goal of love: “that He might sanctify and cleanse it”
* How? “by the Word”
* Why? “that He might present it to Himself a glorious bride”
